- Concept: Polar Plunder is a kid-friendly, single-player action game for Android tablet and mobile devices. Players play as Percy the Pale-Faced Polar Bear and must go underneath the ice in a dangerous and polluted arctic sea to collect fish for her two hungry cubs. Players guide Percy using their device’s touch screen, and must avoid Snappy the Shark – who steals fish from Percy – and trash dumped by a negligent human on a garbage boat that causes Percy to restart the level.
Levels become dotted with increasing amounts of oil drums as the game progresses, which slow Percy down and make it more difficult to dodge other dangers. The game brings attention to problems that polar bears face in the Arctic, particularly those caused by pollution and human neglect, without ever having to hammer its point into players’ heads. This subtlety is what makes the game so successful.
By placing the player within the context and embedding the issues into the mechanics of the game, Polar Plunder can create substantial impact without having to make a splash.
